How the disaster happened

Around 6 pm on Wednesday, cabin No.2, at the bottom of the Funicular, “gasped sharply”, the report said.

“After moving about 10 meters, the movement stopped because some left the rails and the trolley was buried at the bottom end of the cable channel.”

Cabin No.1, above, “Continue to fall and accelerated” before thwarting and destroying “to the side to the walls of a building on the left side, destroying wooden boxes [from which the carriage is constructed]”.

It crashed into an iron pole and supporting pole, causing “significant damage” before hitting the “corner of another building”.

Ruins analysis shows the cable that connects the cabin fails where it is installed in the upper trolley No.1 at the top.

The useful life determined by the cable is 600 days and during the accident, it has been used for 337 days, leaving 263 days before it needs to be replaced.

The company that operates considers this life expectancy to have a “significant safety margin”.

The exact number of people in each cabin when it falls has not been confirmed.
