The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (Nerdc) has introduced radical changes to the country’s basic and secondary school curriculum, making artificial intelligence topics (AI), journalism, checks in facts and digital literacy of the academic session 2025/2026.

The Council said that the reforms are designed to prepare Nigerian children for the digital economy, while reducing excessive dependence on learning the hole. Commercial skills such as sun installation, fashion design, agriculture of cattle and computer repairs/GSM are also included.

In a press release signed by his executive secretary, Prof. Salisu Shehu, the Council warned parents, teachers and educational parties to ignore the previous drafts of the curriculum that had become viral on social media.

According to him, the official version issued is the only authentic guide to what pupils and students will learn from the academic session of 2025/2026.

“The proliferation of unauthorized subjects lists has created confusion in the public space. This version aims to speculation. We are committed to equipping Nigerian children with the tools necessary to thrive in a rapid evolution world,” said Shehu.

A recent statesman report shows that over 75% of Nigerians met false news online in 2024, highlighting the need for literacy of critical media.

Nerdc said that the launch would be gradual, starting from the inscription classes at each three -year cycle (primary 1, primary 4, jss1 and SS1). The training seminars of teachers at national level and the awareness campaigns are planned to fill the gaps on the ability.

The breakdown of the complete subject

Primary 1–3: English, mathematics, Nigerian languages, basic science, history, citizenship studies, creative arts, phe, crs/is, Arabic (optional).

Primary 4–6: adds basic digital alphabetization and pre-vocal studies.

JSS 1–3: introduces digital technologies and commercial options.

SS 1–3: mandatory core includes English, mathematics, digital technologies, citizenship, a commercial matter, with large options in science, humanities and business disciplines.
