The Northern Elders Forum (Nef) declared support for the establishment of the State Police, stating that the initiative, if correctly implemented, would significantly improve security throughout the country.
The spokesman for the NEF, Prof. Abubakar Jiddere, made this known in a press conference to announce the inaugural edition of the investment and industrialization summit of northern Nigeria, scheduled for 29 and 30 September 2025.
Jiddere observed that the forum trusts the idea, provided that it is created in line with existing laws and regulations.
“If the State Police is established within the framework of the law, it will be a welcome development capable of drastically improving safety in the region,” he said.
He explained that the summit, organized jointly by Nef, 19 northern states and the New Nigeria Development Company (Nndc), is in progress for over 18 months.
According to him, the event is designed to launch a patriotic agenda to strengthen the push for the development of the North while creating new opportunities for citizens, Nigeria and international partners.
By describing the summit as more than a simple economic meeting, Jiddere said that it represents “a new vision, an invitation to economic action, an appeal to consciousness and a strategic plan to unlock the promise of northern Nigeria”.
