Nigeria @ 65: Mark urges NSC to establish the platform to celebrate athletes for contributions

Abuja (basic reporter) in the role of Nigeria marks his 65th anniversary of the independence on Wednesday 1 October, the promoter of basketball and initiator of the Mark D ‘Ball basketball championship, Mr. Igoche Mark, praised the athletes of the country for their exceptional contributions.

In a sincere message, Mark praised active and retired athletes for having constantly put Nigeria on the global map through their dedication, hard work and results. “Your dedication, hard work and results not only brought us pride, but also inspired a generation of Nigerians,” he said.

The sports administrator urged the National Sports Commission to establish a platform to celebrate these athletes and recognize their valuable contribution to Nigerian sports. He underlined the need to honor their inheritance and provide a structure for their continuous involvement in sports after retirement.

To support athletes in transition, Mark recommended to implement “pension plans to guarantee a transition without continuity in life after sport. This would allow athletes to plan their future and maximize their post-athletic careers”.

However, he proposed a welfare package for retired athletes, including access to health programs, education and economic enhancement. “In this way, we can show our appreciation for their service and make sure they are treated,” added Mark.

While Nigeria celebrates its 65th anniversary of independence on October 1, with the theme “Nigeria @ 65: all the hands on the bridge for a larger nation”, the feelings of Mr. Mark echo the feelings of many Nigerians who believe in the importance of recognizing and supporting the athletes of the country.
