Nigerian Inspector General of Police Olatunji Ridwan Disu has underlined his readiness to strengthen police-media relations by making a surprise appearance at the FCT NUJ conference. He commended FCT journalists for their role in informing the public and contributing to national development.
The newly confirmed IGP was welcomed by the conference with applause, admiration and a standing ovation, as he became the first police chief to attend an NUJ conference so early in his tenure. Disu described his relationship with the media as one based on mutual respect and professionalism.
“I have always had a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with journalists. They are professionals who deserve respect and should never be treated like beggars,” he said.
He called for deeper collaboration between police and media, saying this would increase public trust and improve communication about safety. He urged both officers and journalists to behave responsibly, stressing that professionalism leaves lasting impressions.
In response, Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, congratulated Disu on his appointment and described him as a long-time friend of the press. He expressed confidence in his leadership and promised the council’s willingness to work with the police to obtain objective safety reports.
Ike also invited him as a special guest at the council’s Press Week 2026 celebration, reaffirming NUJ FCT’s commitment to responsible journalism and initiatives that strengthen security and governance
