Operation HADIN KAI confirms that numerous suicide bombings have rocked Maiduguri

The Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has confirmed multiple suicide bomb blasts in the Maiduguri metropolis.

This is contained in a statement signed by OPHK Media Information Officer Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba on Tuesday morning.

According to the statement, the incidents occurred at around 7.05pm on Monday, March 16, 2026, within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC). According to the statement, suspected Boko Haram (terrorist) suicide bombers detonated improvised explosive devices at three locations: the Post Office area, Monday Market axis and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), during the Iftar period.

Uba said in the statement that the attacks, which targeted crowded public areas, aimed to cause mass casualties and spread panic across the city.

“Operation HADIN KAI troops, working in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and other security agencies, responded quickly to the situation. The affected areas were immediately secured and isolated to avoid further casualties.

“Emergency response teams, including personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other medical services, evacuated victims to the general hospital, specialist hospital and UMTH for urgent medical treatment.

“Medical staff are currently treating the injured, while rescue and evacuation operations are underway.

Preliminary reports indicate that several suicide bombers may have infiltrated the city to carry out coordinated attacks in densely populated locations. In response, security forces intensified surveillance, patrols and counter-IED operations to track down the remaining suspects and prevent further incidents.

According to the statement, residents are urged to “remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded areas where possible and report any suspicious people, objects or activities to security agencies.”

Top reporters report that Operation HADIN KAI also expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and reassured the public of its continued commitment to protecting lives and property, as well as prosecuting those responsible for the attacks.
