Davido drops his Grammy chase, doubles down on his African identity in music

Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido says he is no longer focused on winning a Grammy, signaling a shift in priorities as he enters a new phase in his career centered on authenticity and African identity.

Speaking on the Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show with Eddie Kadi on Tuesday, the singer reflected on his global achievements, noting that he has performed all over the world, sold out huge arenas, and earned multiple Grammy nominations in recent years.

Davido says the achievement has given him a sense of satisfaction, allowing him to move away from chasing Western validation and instead concentrate on making music that reflects his roots.

“This is part of my career, I’ve performed everywhere and sold out every arena. I’ve been to three Grammys in the last three years. The music that’s coming next is very Davido; very African. We’ve done that, so I don’t really want to do western music,” he said.

He added that his strong fan base across Africa, particularly in South Africa, where he has built deep collaborations, reinforced his decision to focus on music closer to the continent.
