Akwa Ibom village chief arrested, AK-47 rifle recovered

The Akwa Ibom State Police have arrested Chief Edet, head of Asik Ubofa fishing village in Effiat clan, Mbo Local Government Area, for alleged illegal possession of firearms.

A statement from State Police Command spokesperson Timfon John confirmed that intelligence officers swooped on the suspect on March 24, 2026, at around 10:15 am, recovering an AK-47 rifle and two empty magazines.

“Investigators carried out the operation without any incident and arrested the suspect on the spot,” John said.

“He is now in police custody as investigations continue to trace the source of the firearm, uncover his motives and arrest any accomplices for prosecution.”

The police spokesperson reiterated the command’s determination to crack down on the illegal proliferation of weapons and urged members of the public in possession of illegal weapons to surrender them voluntarily or face the full brunt of the law.

John also commended the public for providing crucial information, urging continued cooperation with security agencies to ensure security in the state.

This arrest is part of a larger effort by law enforcement agencies to curb illegal circulation of weapons and violent crime in Akwa Ibom communities.
