Police arrest suspected armed robber, recover firearms in Owerri

Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered firearms and other stolen items in Owerri, as part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crime in the state.

The suspect, identified as Chigaemezu Aguguom, originally from Umuneke in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, was arrested on April 2, 2026 at around 6am by a patrol team from Orji Division in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotics Unit.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, the operation was carried out based on credible information.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Orji Division, CSP Kennedy Oti, led the team that arrested the suspect at Bishop’s Court axis near Pacific Hotel, Owerri.

Police revealed that the suspect was found with gunshot wounds allegedly sustained during a botched criminal operation.
During interrogation, Aguguom reportedly confessed to being a member of a five-man armed robbery gang and provided information that is currently aiding the police in their efforts to arrest other absconding syndicate members.

The recovered items include two locally made firearms with five live cartridges, four smartphones, a wristwatch and other valuables suspected to have been stolen.

Police said the suspect and exhibits have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Owerri, for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, has assured residents of adequate security during the Easter period. He urged citizens to support the police by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through designated emergency lines.

The Command reiterated its commitment to supporting operations aimed at combating criminal activities across the State.
