Pressure mounts as Ogun Muslim groups call for inclusion in the 2027 governorship race

A coalition of Muslim vanguards and key stakeholders in Ogun State have intensified calls for the emergence of a Muslim governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections, citing the need for equity, inclusiveness and balanced representation in the state’s political leadership.

The group, under the umbrella of Ogun Muslim Vanguards, made its position known during a press conference on Sunday, where its president, Amir Sanusi Daud, urged political parties to prioritize fairness in their candidate selection processes.

The advocacy, themed “Ogun 2027 – Consideration of a Muslim Candidate for Fair Representation Across the Region and Religion,” seeks to address what the coalition has described as a long-standing under-representation of Muslims in the state’s top political offices.

Speaking to reporters, Daud rejected claims that the request was rooted in religious sentiment, stressing instead that it was guided by the principles of competence, capacity and fairness.

He said: “This advocacy is not a dogmatic appeal. We are advocating for competence, ability and qualified candidates with experience and visibility. We are encouraging Muslim candidates to come forward and compete for elective positions in government.”

Daud argued that Ogun State’s leadership over the past three decades has not adequately reflected its religious diversity, stressing that Muslim representation in the governorship has remained minimal.

“For the past 34 years, Muslim representation in the governorate has been minimal. This reality requires reflection and equity. Heeding this call will improve diversity and strengthen nation-building,” he added.

The coalition argued that inclusive governance is essential for democratic consolidation, warning that failure to reflect the socio-religious composition of the state in leadership could weaken public trust.

He also called on political parties, especially the ruling All Progressives Congress, to adopt transparent and inclusive processes that give all qualified aspirants a level playing field.

According to stakeholders, their demand is not driven by sectoral interests but by the need to ensure that all segments of society feel a sense of ownership in governance.

They added that fair representation would promote stability, mutual respect and sustainable development across the State.

The group urged delegates, political actors and decision makers to consider inclusivity as a critical factor in preparing for the 2027 gubernatorial election.

He reaffirmed his commitment to promoting social harmony and democratic participation, expressing optimism that the initiative will strengthen unity and progress in Ogun State.
