2027: Governor Makinde will run for president under APM

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has officially declared that he will contest to take over as President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Makinde stated on Thursday that he would do this under the banner of the Allied People’s Movement (APM).

The governor announced this at a public meeting held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the state capital, finally ending the battle over who controls the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, Your Excellency, announce my candidacy for the position of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

Makinde earlier led the Taminu Turaki faction of the PDP in Oyo State to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the APM as part of a strategic alliance for the upcoming elections.

Based on the agreement, candidates from the PDP faction who will compete for the governorship, Senate, DPR and DPR seats are expected to run on the APM platform, not the PDP, in the 2027 elections.

Earlier, supporters, party loyalists and political stakeholders had thronged the venue when the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Allied People’s Movement (APM) held a Grand Unity Rally ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The rally came shortly after the two parties officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), an agreement overseen by Governor Makinde, and APM National Chairman, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle.

The signing ceremony held earlier at the PDP South West Secretariat, Soji Adagunodo Building, along Old Ife Road, Ibadan, marked what observers described as a strategic political partnership aimed at increasing the strength of both parties ahead of the upcoming elections.
