FG announced a two-day holiday for Eid al-Fitr celebrations

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, 2026 as national holidays to commemorate this year’s Eid al-Fitr holiday.

The announcement was made by Minister of Home Affairs Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo through a statement by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Magdalena Ajani on Monday.

According to the statement, the holiday declaration underscores the government’s recognition of the religious significance of Islamic holidays and their importance to millions of Muslims in Nigeria and around the world.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims both at home and in the diaspora, describing Eid al-Adha as a holy day centered on sacrifice, obedience, faith and compassion.

He urged Nigerians to use this period to pray for national peace, unity and continued progress.

“The Federal Government urges all Nigerians to use this period to pray and reflect, asking for divine guidance over the country as it continues to strive to achieve peace, security and prosperity for every citizen,” the statement read.

The minister also encouraged citizens to uphold the values ​​of peaceful coexistence, mutual understanding and national unity during the celebrations.

The Federal Government further wished Muslims across Nigeria a peaceful, joyful and spiritual celebration of Eid al-Adha.
