El-Rufai’s ally Lawal wins Ogun ADC governorship primaries by wide margin

A close aide of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Jimi Lawal, has won the African Democratic Congress governorship in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawal emerged winner of the party’s primary elections held in 236 constituencies of the state, polling a total of 19,428 votes to defeat his closest rivals.

Announcing the results on Monday at the party secretariat, the National Organizing Secretary of the ADC and Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Election Committee, Adebimpe Adelowo, said Lawal achieved a landslide victory over Abiodun Collins Ogundipe, who polled 5,775 votes, and a US-based doctor, Dr. Marie Abolaji Odusina, who polled 4,825 votes.

Adelowo said: “Having secured the highest number of votes, Hon. Jimi Lawal is declared the winner of the Ogun State governorship primary election and the ADC candidate for the 2027 general elections.”

He disclosed that the exercise was conducted over the weekend and monitored by officials of the Independent National Election Commission in all constituencies, stressing that the election umpire expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout and orderly conduct of party members.

The party scribe also dismissed speculation of his removal from office, insisting that he will remain the duly recognized national organizing secretary in line with the party’s constitution.

Citing Article 14 (13) (iv) of the ADC constitution, Adelowo said his office has the power to coordinate and implement all field activities of the party.

He also expressed confidence in the party’s chances in the 2027 polls, describing the ADC as “the party to beat”, while stressing that it remains united and committed to grassroots mobilisation.

According to him, the results of the primaries were forwarded to the party president in his capacity as president of the State Congress, in compliance with the relevant provisions of the party constitution.
