Oyo voters, not my name, will decide 2027 governor – Olubadan Ladoja warns aspirants

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, has declared that no name-dropping or political association with him will determine the outcome of the 2027 Oyo State governorship election, insisting that voters alone will decide who governs the state.

Ladoja made the remark on Wednesday in Ibadan while addressing journalists at his residence in Bodija, shortly after Eid-el-Kabir prayers, amid escalating political maneuvering ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The monarch expressed concern that several governorship aspirants would exploit his name to gain political ground in communities in Oyo State, warning that such tactics would not translate into electoral victory.

“Let them use my name to promote themselves if it is meaningful to them. But ultimately the people will decide who governs them, not my name,” he said.

Ladoja, a former governor and senator, stressed that while he considers all politicians as “his children”, the support of traditional authority or perceived influence should not be confused with electoral guarantee.

He urged aspirants to focus on their achievements, competence and engagement with the electorate rather than relying on token affiliations.

Also speaking, the traditional ruler condemned the recent abduction of 39 pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state, describing the incident as deeply worrying.

However, he noted that security agencies were working behind the scenes to ensure the release of the victims.

“The government and security agencies are doing their best. They just don’t tell you what they are doing to ensure the release of people abducted for security reasons,” he said.

Ladoja also expressed concern over the growing cases of land grabbing in Ibadan, warning that such activities would no longer be tolerated under the surveillance of the traditional institution.

He called for stricter enforcement of laws and community vigilance to preserve peace and order across Ibadanland, urging residents to resist illegal land acquisition.

The monarch’s comments come amid growing political realignments in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections, with aspirants intensifying consultations in local government areas.
