Emerse Fae regrets Ivory Coast’s missed opportunities after Norway defeat

Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae admitted his team paid the price for missed opportunities following their 2-1 defeat to Norway in the round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup.

The Ivorians were eliminated on Tuesday night after Erling Haaland scored a late goal to continue his impressive scoring streak in the tournament and send Norway to the round of 16 against Brazil.

Antonio Nusa had earlier opened the scoring for Norway before Amad Diallo scored a brilliant equalizer to draw level with Ivory Coast in a tense match.

Speaking after the match, Fae said his team failed to make the most of key moments despite fighting until the end.

“That’s football. When you have chances, you have to score,” Fae told FIFA after the match.

“We did the hard part by equalizing. Unfortunately, we conceded that goal at the end. It’s a shame. The players gave everything and played until the end.”

The 42-year-old also highlighted his team’s lack of World Cup experience, insisting the tournament would serve as an important lesson for the future.

“At this level, it all comes down to the small details. You have to be focused from start to finish, regardless of the opponent. It was the first World Cup for everyone. I think the players have learned a lot.”

Team captain Franck Kessié echoed his coach’s frustration, saying the Ivorians lacked composure in decisive moments.

“This elimination leaves a very bitter taste. We had a real chance. They managed to take advantage of their opportunities, while we lacked composure in the important moments,” said Kessie.

The defeat ends Ivory Coast’s impressive World Cup campaign, as Norway advances to face Brazil in the round of 16.
