Beyond the stadium: Tinubu urges media to reject terrorist propaganda, says: ‘We must protect our nation’

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian journalists and media organizations to resist becoming propaganda channels for terrorists and kidnappers, urging the press to maintain professionalism and put the interests of the nation above sensational reporting.

The President made the call on Thursday during the inaugural dinner of the Press Corps of the House of Representatives held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he described the media as a vital partner in strengthening democracy and safeguarding national security.

Speaking to journalists covering the Presidency, Tinubu warned that irresponsible reporting could embolden criminal groups and undermine the country’s efforts to combat insecurity.

“”The media must resist the temptation to become megaphones for terrorists and kidnappers. “We must protect our nation,” declared the President.

Tinubu noted that Nigeria faces significant security challenges, including terrorism, kidnappings and other violent crimes, and emphasized that the actions of the media can strengthen national unity or unintentionally aid those who seek to destabilize the country.

“They want us divided. They want you and me to be afraid of each other. We will not give in to their whims and caprices,” he said, urging journalists to report responsibly while remaining committed to truth and accuracy.

While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to freedom of expression and freedom of the press, the President reminded media professionals that these constitutional rights come with corresponding responsibilities.

According to him, the digital age has made credible journalism more important than ever, as misinformation and unverified content continues to spread rapidly on social media platforms.

Tinubu also acknowledged that his administration has received praise and criticism from the media and said he welcomes constructive scrutiny that helps citizens understand government policies and national priorities.

“We have to provide context and help citizens understand not only what has changed, but also where we are going,” he told members of the press.

The President described journalists and government officials as partners working towards the same goal of preserving democracy and promoting national development.

The event also saw President Tinubu decorated as Grand Patron of the House of Representatives Press Corps, while prominent journalists and media professionals were honored for their contributions to journalism and public service.

As Nigeria continues its battle against insecurity, Tinubu’s message underlines the growing expectation that the media inform the public without amplifying narratives capable of promoting the objectives of criminal and terrorist groups.
