The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a man, Muhammad Sani, to 20 years imprisonment for withholding information about a notorious bandit allegedly involved in supplying arms and ammunition to kidnappers and terrorists in Niger State.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that Justice Emeka Nwite handed down the sentence on Monday after convicting Sani of two terrorism-related charges under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The court found Sani guilty of conspiring to conceal information about an alleged notorious bandit identified as Danranmi, who is currently at large, and of failing to report intelligence information that could have helped law enforcement agencies arrest him.
According to the indictment, Sani and Danranmi conspired on January 9, 2023, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, to conceal the fact that the fugitive was supplying arms and ammunition to kidnappers and bandits operating in and around Niger State.
The prosecution further accused Sani of knowingly withholding information that would materially assist security agencies in arresting the suspect, contrary to the provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The indictment further alleged that Sani received ₦580,000 from Danranmi to procure 150 rounds of ammunition from a supplier identified only as “President,” knowing that the ammunition was intended for terrorist activities.
However, the court only convicted him on counts one and two, relating to conspiracy to conceal information and failure to disclose information about the alleged bandit.
Judge Nwite sentenced Sani to 20 years’ imprisonment without the possibility of a fine on each of the two counts. The sentences will take effect from January 11, 2023, the date of his arrest.
The judge also ordered that the convict serve his prison term at the Kuje Correctional Center in Abuja.
Danranmi, the alleged bandit at the center of the case, remains at large.
