APM urges Tinubu to suspend Umahi, launch independent investigation into Mary Habila’s death

The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend the Minister of Public Works, David Umahi, pending the outcome of an independent investigation into the death of Mary Habila, a staff member of the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences.

Opposition parties say the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death have raised widespread public concern and require an open and impartial investigation capable of restoring confidence in the government’s commitment to justice and accountability.

In a statement issued on Thursday by National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the party urged the President to take decisive action by ordering an independent investigation into the incident.

The statement read, “The Allied People’s Movement demands that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu save the image of the nation and the integrity of the Nigerian government by immediately dismissing the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, and ordering an open, independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mary Habila.”

Mary Habila died on June 27 at a staff accommodation facility attached to the Minister of Public Works in Ebonyi State, an incident that continues to arouse great public interest and calls for greater transparency.

Umahi has consistently maintained that he had nothing to do with the circumstances surrounding the death and has publicly supported a forensic autopsy to determine the exact cause. His legal team also asked the Ebonyi State Police Command to ensure a thorough post-mortem examination before the body is sent home for burial.

The minister’s lawyer further clarified that Habila was staying in accommodation meant for staff members and associates, not at the minister’s private residence, while stressing that the investigation must be transparent and comprehensive.

However, the family of the deceased has applied to the Ebonyi State High Court to halt the proposed autopsy requested by the police, arguing that they do not suspect foul play. Even though legal action has been taken, the police are continuing to investigate this matter.

Responding to the development, APM argued that only an independent investigation would be able to address the concerns raised by Nigerians and strengthen public confidence in the government.

According to the party, “This also risks eroding public trust in the Tinubu administration’s commitment to justice, accountability and the sanctity of human life.”

Opposition parties stated that questions surrounding the incident must be answered through a credible and impartial process.

“Our party is pursuing an investigation that answers critical questions on the minds of Nigerians,” the statement said.

APM further argues that the President has a constitutional and moral obligation to demonstrate that holders of public office are subject to the supremacy of law like other citizens.

The statement said, “APM demands a transparent, impartial and independent probe that will reveal the truth, ensure justice for Mary Habila and restore public confidence in the government’s commitment to accountability and the rule of law.”

The party also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, and promised to continue advocating for justice.

“APM, as the people’s party, deeply sympathizes with Mary’s family and assures us of our commitment to ensuring justice is served,” the statement added.

Mary Habila’s death remains a national concern, and civil society groups, political organizations and other stakeholders are calling for an independent investigation even as police continue to work to determine the cause of her death.
