Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has confirmed that his much-anticipated heavyweight clash with British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua will take place at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Fury made the announcement on Instagram, sharing a promotional poster featuring him and Joshua against the New York City skyline. However, he did not declare an official date for the meeting.
“What a place New York, and what a venue MSG, and what a Fury vs. AJ fight, the land of opportunity,” Fury wrote.
“What a weekend out for guys pissing in New York. Iconic! Not much longer, guys.”
Despite Fury’s announcement, Joshua and his promoter, Matchroom Boxing, had yet to officially confirm the venue at the time of reporting. The proposed move to New York remained a major talking point in the negotiations.
Estimated date for November
The fight is expected to take place in November, with the date scheduled for November 20th. Reports indicated that the meeting was planned as part of a deal backed by Saudi entertainment chief Turki Alalshikh and broadcaster Netflix.
Joshua had initially preferred the fight to take place in the UK, with Wembley Stadium among the venues mooted. However, organizers have pushed for the contest to be held in the United States, with Madison Square Garden emerging as the leading option.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has expressed concern about moving the fight to New York, particularly due to tax implications that could affect Joshua’s earnings. However, Hearn indicated that Joshua’s camp could accept a US headquarters if suitable financial terms are agreed.
Fans question the American location
The prospect of staging an all-British heavyweight clash in New York has attracted criticism from some boxing fans, who believe a fight of this magnitude should take place in the UK.
Wembley Stadium was mentioned as a preferred alternative, given the British backgrounds of both fighters and the extent of the rivalry.
Madison Square Garden, however, has a significant connection to Joshua. The New York venue was where he suffered the first defeat of his professional career when Andy Ruiz Jr stunned him in 2019.
Long-awaited clash between heavyweights
The proposed Fury-Joshua fight has been discussed for years, with previous attempts to collapse the dispute during negotiations.
Both fighters have since continued their careers, with Fury suffering back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024 before returning to the ring, while Joshua has also remained active.
The latest negotiations represent the point at which the two heavyweight stars finally met in the ring. However, despite Fury’s latest announcement, reports indicate that some details still need to be resolved before the fight can be officially finalized.
If the remaining issues are resolved, the proposed November 20 showdown at Madison Square Garden would result in one of the most anticipated heavyweight bouts of the era, bringing together two of British boxing’s biggest stars on American soil.
