Nigeria reiterates support for the United Nations amid global strategic change

Abuja (Key Reporters)-The Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the United Nations and to the purposes and principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
Ambassador Enikanolaiye gave the assurance on Tuesday, September 2, 2026, when the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
The Minister welcomed what he described as a shift in strategic thinking within the United Nations system and commended the Organization for its consistent and selfless support to Nigeria through its agencies, funds and programs over the years.
He described the United Nations as a strategic partner in humanitarian action, development cooperation and peacebuilding, highlighting its impactful interventions, particularly in difficult and vulnerable communities across the country and around the world.
“For us as a country, we value our relationship with the United Nations. We actively participate in the maintenance of international peace and security and the advancement of the other purposes for which the United Nations was established. We are always pleased to partner with the United Nations because your work supports our people and contributes to the success of Nigeria. I wish to pledge our full support to the United Nations,” the Minister said.
On the challenge of dwindling resources, Ambassador Enikanolaiye called for innovative thinking, including stronger partnerships with the private sector, to mobilize alternative financing mechanisms for sustainable development and humanitarian response.
At the start of his speech, Fall, who will conclude his assignment in Nigeria later this year, described Nigeria as his second home, having served in the country for almost a decade, first with UNICEF and later as a resident and humanitarian coordinator.
He commended Nigeria’s enduring contributions to the United Nations, not only as a committed Member State but also as a rallying force for the ideals of the Organization. He recalled Nigeria’s historic role in regional peacekeeping, particularly through ECOMOG, as a testament to its leadership in promoting peace and security in West Africa and beyond.
