Niger Tornadoes have started their NPFL27 season on a winning note after beating Enyimba FC 2-1 in a nervy season opener at the renovated Bako Kontagora Stadium, Minna.
Michael Olalusi’s superb late goal proved decisive and Ikon Allah Boys held their nerve to secure all three points in an entertaining contest.
The match started cautiously, but the intensity gradually increased midway through the first half as the Tornadoes began to create openings in the Enyimba defence.
Ismail Sarki and Rickson Mendos troubled the visitors’ defense with their attacking moves, but the hosts failed to convert their initial chances.
The Tornadoes finally got their reward in the 40th minute when Sarki was brought down inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to point to the spot.
Aliyu Mohammed Goyi stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, sending the Enyimba goalkeeper the wrong way to give the hosts the lead.
The Tornadoes went into halftime with a 1-0 lead and came back with renewed determination to extend their lead.
However, Enyimba gradually grew into the game and began to find spaces in the Tornado defence. Their persistence paid off in the 71st minute when Wonah Williams rose highest to head home a well-directed free-kick from Iheme Peculiar, restoring parity.
With the game well balanced, the Tornadoes’ technical bench responded with attacking changes, introducing Bashir Usman and Michael Olalusi in an attempt to regain control.
The replacements paid immediate dividends.
Olalusi produced the decisive moment in the 82nd minute, showing composure and pace to evade his markers before unleashing a well-placed shot that found its way under the Enyimba goalkeeper and into the net.
The goal sparked celebrations among the home fans as the Tornadoes successfully protected their lead in the closing stages to claim three valuable points.
Dogo: Deserved victory
Niger Tornadoes technical advisor, coach Kabiru Suleiman Dogo, described the victory as deserved, saying the team worked hard to earn the result.
He commended football fans and stakeholders across Niger State for their support and called for continued support throughout the season.
Dogo also expressed optimism that the team will improve further as more players become cleared and available for selection.
