Nigerian Army Redeploys Generals to Major Security Theaters – THIS UPDATE

The Nigerian Army has announced a sweeping reshuffle of its senior leadership, redeploying several major generals and brigadier generals to key operational, command and administrative positions as part of efforts to reposition the service for a more effective response to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

The assignments, approved by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, affect some critical operational theaters, formations, training institutes and strategic departments of the Army.

The Army said the exercise was intended to strengthen its command structure, improve operational effectiveness and ensure that officers with the appropriate leadership experience and professional expertise are deployed in positions where they can have the greatest impact.

In a statement published on Army Official X Profile on Wednesday, Acting Director of Army Public Relations Colonel Apollonia Anele said the reshuffle prioritized critical operational theaters and strategic appointments.

According to her, the aim was to ensure that the “right leadership, experience and expertise” were positioned to deliver decisive results.

One of the most significant changes is the deployment of Major General IA Ajose from the Department of Army Operations of the Army Headquarters to the Theater Command of Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, where he will serve as Theater Commander.

His deployment places him in command of one of the army’s most important counterinsurgency operations, responsible for confronting Boko Haram, ISWAP and other armed groups operating in the northeast.

The North East theater remains an important component of Nigeria’s internal security operations, with military forces continuing to conduct offensive and clearance operations, protect communities and infrastructure, and disrupt the ability of insurgents to operate across the region.

Ajose’s transfer from the Department of Army Operations to theater command therefore represents a significant operational deployment as the Army seeks to sustain pressure on rebel groups and improve coordination in the region.

In another major change, Major General AE Abubakar, who had previously served under Operation HADIN KAI, has been redeployed to the Center for the Heritage and Future of the Nigerian Army as the Dean of the Faculty of Operational Research.

Major General AM Alechenu also moved from the Defense Headquarters Garrison to the Center for the Heritage and Future of the Nigerian Army.

Major General RT Utsaha, meanwhile, has been redeployed from Army Headquarters Army Standards and Evaluation Department to Defense Headquarters Garrison as Commander.

The reshuffle also affects the Army’s training and civil-military affairs structure.

Major General AM Umar was transferred from the Army Headquarters Civil-Military Affairs Department to the Army War College Nigeria as Commandant, while Major General UM Alkali was redeployed from the college to the Civil-Military Affairs Department.

The changes come as the Army continues to place greater emphasis on professional military training, strategic planning and improved engagement with civilian populations and other government agencies.

Major General GS Muhammed has been redeployed from the Office of the National Security Adviser to the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation as Director General.

Major General JE Osifo, who previously served at the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation, has been transferred to the Military Pensions Board as Chairman.

Additionally, Major General IE Ekpenyong has been redeployed to the Defense Logistics Department of Defense Headquarters as Director of Engineering Services.

The series of appointments span operational, financial, logistical, training and administrative responsibilities, underscoring the broad nature of the Army’s latest command reorganization.

At the Brigadier General level, Brigadier General AA Bello was moved from 6th Division Garrison/Sector 3, South-South Joint Task Force, Operation DELTA SAFE, to the Defense Operations Department of Defense Headquarters.

Brigadier General MS Adamu has been redeployed from the Nigerian Army Women’s Command to the new 8 Brigade, where she will serve as Commander.

The appointment gives Adamu responsibility for a new operational formation as the Army continues to expand and reorganize its force structure to meet emerging security needs.

Brigadier General MS Sule also transitioned from Special Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE to the 27th Task Force Brigade as Commander.

Brigadier General I Sule was redeployed from the Recruitment Management Directorate to the Sixth Division Garrison as commander.

Other changes include moving Brigadier General E Azenda from the Land Forces Simulation Center to the Second Division Garrison as commander.

Brigadier General AS Bugaje, who previously commanded the 2nd Garrison Division, was in turn redeployed to the Land Forces Simulation Center as Administrative Director.

The changes effectively redistribute command responsibilities among officers with expertise in different aspects of military operations, administration, training and force management.

The Chief of Army Staff has tasked the newly appointed officers to justify the confidence reposed in them by the Service. He charged them to demonstrate exemplary leadership, operational innovation, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to duty in their new assignments.

Shaibu also reminded officers that their responsibilities go beyond routine command duties, underscoring the military’s constitutional mandate to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty, protect its territorial integrity and support civil authorities in maintaining peace and security.

The Army said officers are expected to approach their new responsibilities with discipline and a strong sense of mission, particularly as the country faces a number of interconnected security threats.
