Queiroz publishes a statement after resigning as Ghana coach

Carlos Queiroz has issued an emotional farewell statement after mutually parting ways with the Ghana Football Association as coach of the Black Stars.

The Ghana Football Federation confirmed on Thursday, October 1, that both parties have agreed to terminate their service agreement following discussions held in a spirit of mutual respect.

The decision comes just two days after Ghana suffered a shocking 4-2 home defeat to Gambia in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium, having blown a 2-0 lead. The defeat left Ghana bottom of Group C after an earlier 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast.

Queiroz, 73, who was re-elected on September 2 after leading Ghana to the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, said it was not an easy decision.

In his statement shared on the GFA website, Queiroz wrote: “Following discussions held in a spirit of mutual respect, the Ghana Football Association and I have mutually agreed to terminate the Service Agreement governing my role as head coach of the Ghana national team, the Black Stars.

“It was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that in the current circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above all else.

The former Manchester United assistant and Real Madrid coach said it was an honor to serve Ghana and thanked the GFA and its president for the trust.

“I came to Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent. Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established; this, together with our recent performances, led to the decision to end this journey. I leave with respect, gratitude and pride.”

Queiroz paid special tribute to his coaching staff and the Black Stars players, urging Ghanaians to continue supporting the team.

“Above all, I pay tribute to the Black Stars players. Thank you to everyone who represented Ghana with bravery, commitment and pride. They fought for their country and carried the hopes of millions. Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them.

“The talent and potential is there. With unity, support and the right environment, this generation can achieve great things for Ghana.

“To the people of Ghana and all Black Stars fans, thank you for your passion, support and warmth. I will always carry Ghana with me, with respect and affection.”

Queiroz leaves with a record of one victory, two draws and four losses in seven games.

Meanwhile, the GFA is expected to announce an interim coach ahead of back-to-back AFCON qualifiers against Somalia in November.
