Tragedy! 2 twin medical professionals die 2 days apart in Yobe

Yobe State is mourning the death of twin sisters – Dr Hadiya Usman, popularly known as Hassana, and Dr Aidah Usman, also known as Usaina, who died just two days apart from each other in a tragedy that has plunged their family, colleagues and the wider medical community into grief.

The sisters, both healthcare professionals, died on Friday, October 2, and Sunday, October 4, 2026, respectively, after reportedly battling complications associated with sickle cell disease. Project reports

Hadiya was a doctor, while her twin sister, Aidah, was a Doctor of Pharmacy. Their deaths sparked an outpouring of grief, particularly due to the circumstances surrounding Aidah’s death shortly after her twin sister’s burial.

The deceased were the daughters of Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman, medical director of the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Nguru, Yobe State.

Hadiya dies after a sickle cell anemia crisis

Reports of the tragedy indicate that Hadiya had been under treatment at FMC Nguru for about a week after suffering from a sickle cell crisis.

She ultimately died on Friday, leaving her family and loved ones to prepare for her burial while still coming to terms with the loss.

His remains were reportedly buried after funeral prayers in the emir’s palace in Nguru on the same day.

The death was particularly painful for the family because Hadiya’s twin sister, Aidah, was also reportedly battling health complications around the same time.

According to reports, Aidah was treated at the University of Maiduguri teaching hospital before being discharged.

She returned home after treatment, but her sister’s death would soon be followed by another devastating development.

Aidah dies two days later

Aidah, who was reportedly pregnant and also suffered from sickle cell anemia, died on Sunday, just two days after her twin sister died.

After attending Hadiya’s burial, Aidah then visited her sister’s grave in Nguru with her mother to pray for her.

Reports say she suddenly collapsed after the visit.

She was immediately taken to hospital for medical treatment, but was later confirmed dead.

The circumstances compounded the grief surrounding the tragedy, as the family had just begun to mourn Hadiya when they were faced with the death of their twin sister.

The two women, who had shared the bond of being twins since birth, then died within about 48 hours.

A family deeply linked to healthcare

The loss also resonated within the healthcare community as both sisters pursued careers in the medical profession.

Hadiya trained and worked as a doctor, while Aidah became a pharmacist.

Their mother, Professor Hadiza Usman, is also a leading figure in the healthcare sector and currently heads FMC Nguru.

Usman, is a professor of gynecological oncology and reproductive health and was reportedly the first female consultant obstetrician and gynecologist produced by the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

She was promoted to the rank of professor in 2018 and became medical director and CEO of FMC Nguru in November 2022, becoming the first woman to hold the position at the institute.

The deaths of his two daughters have consequently sparked sympathy throughout the medical community and among people who know the family.

Medical community in mourning

Messages of condolence continued to reach the family, with colleagues, friends and supporters expressing shock at the double tragedy.

The circumstances were particularly difficult for those who knew the sisters, as the loss of one twin was followed almost immediately by the death of the other.

The Nguru Federal Medical Center also acknowledged Aidah’s death, describing her as Professor Usman’s second twin.

For healthcare colleagues, the tragedy represents the loss of two young professionals who had chosen careers dedicated to the care and well-being of others.

Sickle cell disease adds another dimension

The reported link between deaths and sickle cell disease has also drawn attention to the burden of this disease, which is hereditary and can cause serious health complications.

People living with sickle cell disease may experience episodes known as vaso-occlusive crises, which can cause severe pain and other complications that require medical attention.

However, details of the specific medical circumstances surrounding the deaths have not been independently established beyond reports linking both sisters to sickle cell disease.

The family’s immediate concern remains the mourning and burial of the sisters while dealing with the extraordinary circumstance of losing two children in the space of two days.

The pain of a double defeat

The tragedy prompted broader reflection on the unpredictability of life and the unusual circumstances in which the sisters died.

They were born together as twins, developed professional careers in healthcare and, within two days, both died.

For the mother and other family members, the sequence of events created a particularly painful period of mourning.

Friends and relatives continued to pray for the family, asking Allah to grant them patience and strength to bear the loss.

Messages circulating among mourners also urged Muslims to remember the deceased in their prayers and ask Allah to forgive their shortcomings, accept their good deeds and grant them mercy.

Condolences pour in

The news continued to draw sympathy from colleagues, friends and members of the wider community, with prayers offered for the repose of the nuns’ souls.

The family was urged to take comfort in the memories of the two women and the lives they lived as healthcare workers.

The tragedy also highlighted the profound personal cost of losing loved ones, especially when two members of the same family die in such a short period.

For the Usman family, the loss is not only that of two daughters but also of two twin sisters whose lives were closely intertwined since birth.

May Allah forgive Dr. Hadiya Usman and Dr. Aidah Usman, have mercy on them, accept their good deeds and admit them to Al-Jannatul Firdaus.

May He also grant Professor Hadiza Usman and the entire family the strength, patience and faith to bear the loss of their two daughters.
