Elections 2027: Makinde promises a 4-year transitional government if…

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has promised to establish an all-encompassing transitional government of national unity that would not last beyond four years if elected president in the 2027 general elections.

Makinde, the Allied People’s Movement (APM) presidential candidate, made the promise on Saturday while addressing the party’s North East Zone town hall meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, as part of its pre-election consultations.

He said his proposed administration will begin on May 29, 2027 and will prioritize national unity, inclusiveness, honesty and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.

“I am here today before you to tell you that the government you will put into office from 29 May 2027 will be a transitional government of national unity.

“Our government will not last more than four years. And it will be an all-encompassing government,” he said.

Makinde also called on the Federal Government to release its oil price model to enable Nigerians understand how petrol prices are determined amid rising costs of living.

He criticized the Tinubu administration’s policies on compressed natural gas (CNG), electric vehicles and the naira-for-grede initiative, claiming they had failed to provide expected relief to Nigerians.

Makinde calls for disclosure of the petrol price model

The governor said the federal government should make its petroleum product price calculations public to allow citizens to understand the factors responsible for current prices.

He cited comments by the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, on television regarding the adoption of price modulation of petroleum products.

According to Makinde, Nigerians need practical solutions to the rising cost of living rather than complicated explanations of government policies.

“They came up with the presidential policy on CNG and electric vehicles. That policy failed. They came up with the naira initiative for crude oil. That policy also failed,” he said.

He added: “We only ask for two things. We don’t want too much grammar; we just want relief for Nigerians.

“We therefore call on the federal government to publish its pricing model so that citizens know how they arrived at the current oil price and allow Nigerians to see how things are going. If they have a better solution, they will present it.”

Makinde argued that government officials should not assume that they are the only Nigerians capable of developing solutions to the country’s challenges.

“The fact that you are in government or in the Presidential Villa does not make you the only Nigerian with common sense,” he said, urging the federal government to allow other citizens to examine its price calculations and contribute ideas.

Insecurity and poverty top the agenda

The APM candidate said his consultations in the North West, North Central and North East highlighted recurring challenges, including insecurity, poverty and inadequate electricity supply.

He pledged to address the issues through an inclusive approach to governance, adding that his proposed administration will focus on policies that directly improve the well-being of Nigerians.

Makinde also accused the Tinubu administration of failing to deliver on some of its campaign promises, particularly in the energy sector.

He recalled the president’s promise that Nigerians would not re-elect him if he failed to fix electricity within four years.

The governor said the 2027 election should mark a shift away from what he described as a politics of lies and deceit, calling for a national reset based on honesty and accountability.

“2027 will mark the end of the politics of lies and deception. It is the time when we will all come together to set a restoration agenda and tell Nigerians the whole truth,” he said.

He added that Nigeria, as the most populous black nation in the world, deserves better outcomes for its citizens.

Makinde explained that the APM delayed the release of its manifesto to allow its leaders to consult Nigerians across the country and incorporate their concerns into the party’s proposed policies.

He promised that an APM-led government will listen to citizens, respect their rights and avoid politicizing issues affecting their well-being.

Bala Mohammed supports Makinde’s presidential ambition

APM National Leader and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has described the party as an opposition platform with the experience and leadership to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

Mohammed said the party continued to attract members and expressed confidence in Makinde’s ability to lead what he called a national renewal agenda.

“APM is the number one opposition party in the country. We have two governors and other elected leaders,” he said.

He added that the party believes in patriotism, equal opportunities and mutual respect among Nigerians, regardless of their background.

Mohammed also welcomed Makinde and his delegation to the North East, saying the party is committed to inclusion and non-tribal initiatives.

Daura promises political details during the campaign

The party’s vice presidential candidate, Lawal Daura, thanked residents of the North East for welcoming the delegation to Yola and described the APM as a platform for honest, patriotic and hardworking Nigerians.

Daura, former director general of the Department of State Services (DSS), said the party will unveil its detailed policy proposals during the national campaign.

He explained that party leaders will visit states to present their programs and vision to voters.

Daura called for fundamental reforms to address Nigeria’s challenges, warning that the country risks stagnation without determined efforts to improve governance.

“With the permission of my presidential candidate, I always say we are ready to reset Nigeria,” he said.

Earlier, party stakeholders and supporters gathered at Yola Airport to welcome Makinde and his delegation, chanting his name and waving the APM flag.
