The newly elected players’ representative on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Dr. Lucky Abubakar Aliyu, has pledged to prioritize the development of grassroots football and work towards restoring the fortunes of Nigerian basketball over the next four years.
Aliyu, who expressed excitement following his election at the Bentley Hotel, Abuja, said the emergence of the new board presented an opportunity to rebuild the game and create a better future for young players across the country.
Speaking after the election, the players’ representative assured basketball stakeholders that the new board will be made up of people committed to the growth and development of the sport.
“I know I’m very, very excited. I’m excited for the game of basketball. I’m excited for these guys who will see us on board and I assure you that the NBBF will have a wonderful board. We will have people who will love the game of basketball. The game of basketball will come to life now,” he said.
Aliyu also described the players’ unanimous support during the elections as a show of confidence, stressing that their collective voice would strengthen their representation on the federation’s board.
These players spoke with one voice, 28 out of 28. What does that mean? It means trust,” he said.
He added that the new board will work together to promote the interests of basketball and ensure that players remain an important part of the federation’s development agenda.
Regarding expectations for the next four years, Aliyu identified the development of grassroots football and the involvement of young talent as key areas requiring attention, underlining the need to rebuild the game from the ground up.
We need to develop from the bottom, involve the skaters so that the national team returns,” he said.
The newly elected representative expressed optimism on the future of Nigerian basketball, assuring stakeholders that the new council plans to advance the sport.
“So don’t worry, we have everything in stock for basketball,” Aliyu added.
