The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has affirmed the outcome of the elective congress of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) held on October 15, 2026, recognizing Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi as the President of the federation for the term 2026-2030.
In a letter dated October 19, 2026, addressed to Dr. Abdullahi, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis congratulated the newly elected NBBF President and other board members, reaffirming the international body’s commitment to good governance and electoral processes conducted in accordance with the federation’s constitution and applicable FIBA regulations.
FIBA also recognized the contribution of the outgoing NBBF board under the leadership of Eng. Ahmadu Musa Kida, acknowledging the transition to a new administration as the federation begins another four-year term.
The recognition provides an important boost to the new leadership as it prepares to advance Nigerian basketball through improved governance, grassroots development, stronger domestic competitions and greater international representation.
Dr Abdullahi’s emergence as president of the NBBF brings with it expectations of a renewed direction for the sport, including a greater focus on athlete welfare, talent discovery and development, and strengthening both men’s and women’s basketball across the country.
The new administration is expected to build on existing structures while pursuing reforms that will expand opportunities for young players, improve the competitiveness of Nigerian teams and position the country more strongly within the African and global basketball communities.
