The declaration of Eid al-Fitr was carried out by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, who confirmed Friday as the first day of Dhul Hijjah. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Chairman of the Religious Development Agency to the Sambo Junaid Sultanate Council in Sokoto State.
The Sultan conveyed his congratulations to the Muslim community in Nigeria, and wished them Allah’s guidance and blessings. He also appealed to Muslims to continue praying for peace, progress and development in the country, and wished all Muslims a Happy Eid al-Fitr.
The statement from the Sultanate council read, “May Allah (SWT) accept our deeds of worship, amen.” The Eid al-Fitr festival, also known as Eid al-Adha or “Festival of Sacrifice,” commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) to obey Allah’s commands.
