The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Eradication Commission (KPK), Ola Olukoyede, has come under fire from social media users after the agency failed to arrest former Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello, after he was declared a fugitive.
Olukoyede had made himself the subject of ridicule when he said he would rather resign from office if he failed to arrest Bello and bring him to justice.
But months later, several attempts to arrest and prosecute the former governor failed, leading many Nigerians to question whether he was above the law.
On Wednesday, a social media user with the handle @FirstLadyShip raised the question of why the EFCC failed to arrest Bello, a fraudster which sparked a flurry of responses, most of which pointed to the fact that Olukoyede failed to match her words with actions.
“The current EFCC chairman has not arrested Yahaya Bello. He has not arrested any notorious looters. All he does is go after Yahoo Boys and petty thieves. He fights financial crimes on television and in the pages of newspapers.
“When I look at some of the case files and see the huge amount of money stolen, I wonder how we can still survive. If you look at some of the case files, you will cry – EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede,” he wrote.

Responding to the post, other users took turns criticizing the anti-corruption boss and the Commission.

@Chaplinez wrote: “Come on, hiding in Naija is easy as long as you have money. So, the EFCC doesn’t know where Yahaya Bello is. For a man who is used to comfort, can he hide comfortably and not be seen? There is no way he can hide in discomfort. He even demanded that he be tried in Kogi. No need!!”
