Against widespread support, the PRP warned against the creation of a state police

Against the widespread support accompanying the move to establish a state police in the country, the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has warned against the plan.

The party in a statement on Thursday signed by its National Chairman, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, says his party is deeply concerned by the plans of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to acquire a State Police through a constitutional amendment at a time when its credibility and competence is at an unprecedented level.

The statement stated that “based on precedent and record, this administration will almost certainly secure what is necessary to amend the constitution and realize its desire to create a State Police. Meanwhile Nigeria needs a major review and overhaul of its security, as well as law and order institutions to address national security and create an environment that should enhance citizens’ trust and confidence in leaders and key institutions”.

According to the party, “this administration does not have the moral assets and trust of the Nigerian people to undertake major changes in the country’s police structure. The APC administration has failed to manage our security structures and institutions. Its plans to engineer the emergence of a State Police are suspicious and must be rejected”.

Baba-Ahmed further said, “The PRP suggests that the upcoming elections should be a threshold that must be crossed with credibility and public recognition before the state decides on important issues such as the structure of the state police”.

The statement further advised the current administration to make more efforts to secure its citizens and end the nightmare that Nigerians are experiencing.
