ZWEDRU, Grand Gedeh County, June 26, 2026 – Grand Gedeh County is set to become the center of Liberia’s opposition politics this weekend as leaders of several opposition parties descend on Zwedru for the Congress for Democratic Change’s (CDC) 22nd anniversary celebration, amid growing signs of efforts to forge a united front against the ruling Unity Party ahead of the 2029 elections.

At the heart of the gathering will be Alternative National Congress (ANC) Political Leader and Standard Bearer Alexander B. Cummings, who has been invited to deliver the keynote address at what the CDC describes as a national political renewal and policy dialogue.

Sources familiar with the event told this paper on Thursday that Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) Political Leader Musa Hassan Bility, All Liberian Party (ALP) Political Leader Benoni Urey, and Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) Political Leader Simeon Freeman are also expected to attend.

According to the sources, beyond celebrating the CDC’s founding, opposition leaders are expected to begin discussions on building a broad coalition aimed at unseating the Unity Party in the 2029 presidential election.

The anniversary celebration, running from June 23 to June 27 under the theme “Zwedru Rises: 2029 Victory Is the Final Destination,” marks a departure from previous CDC commemorations.

In an invitation letter to Cummings, the party said this year’s event has been deliberately redesigned to serve as a platform for national reflection, democratic engagement, policy discussions, and constructive dialogue on Liberia’s future.

The event is expected to attract political leaders, lawmakers, former government officials, members of the diplomatic and international community, civil society organizations, youth and women’s groups, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders from across the country.

CDC National Chairman Atty. Janga A. Kowo said the gathering comes at a time when many Liberians are expressing concern over the country’s direction, citing economic hardship, declining confidence in public institutions, and questions surrounding democratic accountability.

He said the CDC believes opposition leaders have a shared responsibility to engage one another and the Liberian people in meaningful discussions about the nation’s future.

“In recognition of your role as Political Leader and Standard Bearer of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), and the important responsibility opposition leaders bear in shaping Liberia’s democratic future during a period of growing national challenges, the Congress for Democratic Change respectfully invites you to serve as the keynote speaker of the CDC’s 22nd Anniversary and Militant Month Celebration,” the invitation stated.

The CDC said Liberia is at a critical crossroads requiring urgent and honest dialogue among democratic forces on governance, accountability, economic opportunity, and democratic stability.

Cummings is expected to address the gathering on Saturday, June 27, during a national forum focused on the country’s political and economic future.

Kowo said Cummings’ participation is expected to elevate the significance of the event while reinforcing opposition solidarity and fostering a shared vision for Liberia’s democratic future.

The gathering is likely to be closely watched, as it brings together some of the country’s most prominent opposition figures at a time when political maneuvering ahead of the 2029 elections is beginning to gather momentum.
