An unexpected friendship formed in Sask. farm

Laura Greaves, a veterinarian at Sherwood Animal Clinic in Regina, is no stranger to unusual pets, but recently she became known for her special partner.

Having lived on his farm for more than a year, he has raised more than twenty animals, including horses, guinea pigs, alpacas, and llamas. He saw the need for another llama after one of the alpacas on the farm became pregnant. Hoping to find a llama to guard his flock, Greaves found Maple from an ad on Kijiji. Greaves says it’s rare to find llamas in the area – the animals present some challenges.

Greaves, along with her friend Jaquie Poole, adopted Maple, a six-year-old llama who was missing one eye and was very thin.

“It took us a while to figure out what he liked to eat and start working on getting his weight back, then he went blind to us about three weeks ago,” Greaves said.

Without her sight, Maple struggles to adjust. He is often spat at by other llamas and alpacas for accidentally bumping into them.

Greaves decided it was best to separate Maple from the others and think about what to do next.

“He was thinking, ‘Will Maple make it through surgery? Is this fair to her?’ and I said, ‘You know what, let’s give him a chance,’” Poole said.

Greaves looks for a reliable friend in Maple, which leads him to Bo Peep, a vocal sheep with spots on his face.

The three-year-old lamb adjusts to Maple’s life as a guide, her frequent voice keeping Maple grounded and oriented. Greaves said on windy nights, Maple often paces around in a state of stress, but Bo Peep’s call calms the completely blind llama.

What starts as just an attempt to enlist the herd’s guardians turns into a strong bond between two unlikely friends.

After the animals’ stories were shared online, the response was overwhelming and people were eager to know more about the two. Poole says this is just a normal occurrence in their lives on the farm.

“Everyone thought it was a cute story and our husbands said, ‘This is really just a normal day dealing with them.’”

Now with 24 animals on the farm and a new alpaca, there’s never a dull day for Greaves and his friends.
