The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the Edo State government’s decision to indefinitely suspend the resumption of schools in the state as an “expensive political gimmick” over the rise in fuel prices.
The Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, in a memo announced the postponement of the resumption of schools until further notice.
Schools were originally scheduled to reopen on September 9.
The APC Publicity Secretary in the state, Mr. Peter Uwadiae-Enosorogbe, told journalists that he was shocked that the state government could sacrifice the education of children for the sake of politics.
He said: “You cannot sacrifice children’s education because of fuel shortages. It is not today that we have fuel price hikes. This cannot fail the education system.
“No one protested the increase and no parents complained about not being able to send their children to school. This is absurd.

“To any reasonable and rational individual, the government has made another mistake. This is another state government mistake.
“This is not in the interests of children, it is not in the interests of parents, and it is not in the interests of the education system.”
Uwadiae-Enosorogbe called for the reversal of the decision, saying the country’s education has suffered greatly under this administration.
According to him, the performance statistics for the recently released West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results placed Edo at 26th position, an improvement over the first and second positions in the past.
“If you now delay the resumption of teaching and learning activities, how will you reduce the time you have given them to stay at home deliberately. Meanwhile, parents are not complaining,” the spokesperson added.
