Atiku chooses Amaechi as his running mate in a dramatic twist

African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has chosen former Transport Minister, Chibuike Amaechi, as his running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development marks a significant turning point for Amaechi, who had previously ruled out the possibility of replacing Atiku after contesting – and losing – the party’s presidential primaries.

Confirmation of the former Rivers State governor’s acceptance came on Saturday through a former ADC Chairman, Sampson, who simply replied “yes” when asked if Amaechi had accepted the post of Vice President.

Amaechi had been a leading aspirant in the ADC primaries but was defeated by Atiku, the former Vice President of Nigeria. After the exercise, he openly rejected the result, amid accusations from some aggrieved party members that the process was skewed in Atiku’s favour.

Before the primaries, Amaechi had also insisted that he did not purchase the party’s nomination form to settle for a vice president position, a position that underlined his initial reluctance to take a backseat.

However, its eventual acceptance signals a possible reconciliation within the party’s ranks and could strengthen the ADC’s bid to present a formidable challenge in the next presidential election.

At the time of filing this report, neither Atiku nor Amaechi had released an official statement detailing the terms of the agreement or the circumstances that led to the apparent change of position.
