CDHR mobilizes South West for June 1 protest against kidnapping of Oyo school children

The Committee for Defense of Human Rights (CDHR) has issued a sweeping mobilization directive to its branches and affiliated structures in the South West, calling for full participation in a planned mass protest against the continued captivity of abducted school children, pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

The rights group condemned what it described as the “prolonged and unacceptable” detention of kidnapped victims during the May 15, 2026 attack on schools in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where armed assailants stormed educational facilities and abducted students and staff.

In a strongly worded statement released Thursday, the CDHR said the failure of authorities to secure the release of victims weeks after the incident reflects the government’s “painfully slow, weak and ineffective” response to repeated mass abductions targeting schools.

The organization said the situation had become a national embarrassment and called for urgent action to end what it called “the continuing tragedy of Nigerian children being kidnapped and left in captivity.”

As part of a growing coalition of civil society organizations, the Take It Back Movement and allied groups have planned a mass protest for Monday, June 1, 2026, in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

According to organisers, protesters are expected to converge at Mokola roundabout by 8am before embarking on coordinated demonstrations in key parts of the city.

The CDHR said it is directing all its branches in the South West to mobilize members in large numbers in solidarity with the victims and their families.

The planned demonstration is expected to meet four main demands, including the immediate and unconditional release of all abducted students, pupils and teachers.

The group also called on the Federal Government and Oyo State Government to intensify the ongoing rescue operations and publicly reveal a clear and actionable strategy to secure the freedom of the victims.

It also called for the arrest, investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators of the attack, including alleged sponsors of kidnapping rings operating in the region.

The CDHR also renewed calls for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture, insisting that schools must be protected through proactive, intelligence-led measures.

The organization urged authorities to deploy specialized armed school protection units, strengthen intelligence gathering and establish community-based early warning systems to prevent further attacks on educational institutions.

He warned that the continued failure to protect schools would encourage criminal networks and exacerbate public insecurity across the country.

“It is expected that all CDHR branches and affiliated structures in the South West will fully participate in the June 1 protest and organize parallel solidarity actions in their respective states,” the statement adds.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the cause until all abducted victims are safely reunited with their families.

It declared: “Freedom for Oyo school children now. Enough with kidnappings and government inaction. Protect Nigerian children and schools.”
