Court sentences 4 people to death for attack on Owo church

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced four people to death by hanging for their involvement in the 2022 terror attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Francis, Owo in Ondo State.

The Federal Government indicted five people on three counts for their involvement in the terror attack on the church.

At least 41 worshipers were killed and more than 100 others were injured in the terror attack that occurred at mass on Sunday 5 June 2022.

The judge, in his ruling, stated that the Department of State Services (DSS) had been able to prove the charges against the defendants beyond reasonable doubt.

The four prisoners are Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza (25); Al Qasim Idris (20); Jamiu Abdulmalik (26) and Abdulhaleem Idris (25).

Justice Nwite, who held that the evidence presented had proven that the four men committed the act, however acquitted the 5th accused, Momoh Otuho Abubakar, 47, of the charge.

He said: “The prosecution has successfully established nine charges against the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants beyond reasonable doubt.”
