Five sacked police officers on trial for the alleged extrajudicial killing of Oghenemine Ogidi, popularly known as OG Millan, have been remanded in custody by the Asaba High Court, Delta State.
The case arises from the death of 28-year-old Ogidi on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State, during an encounter where he was allegedly intercepted while delivering a package said to contain a manufactured firearm and ammunition.
The accused, including ASP Usman Nuhu (42), ASP Onoloko Dauroupamo (47), ASP Okoh Kelechi (46), Inspector Goodluck Kingsley (42) and Inspector Omonigho Ahweyevu (41), were on Monday produced before Judge Marshal Onome Umukoro of High Court 5 in connection with case no. THC/ASB/CR/M/66C/2026.
The court ordered the officers to be held at Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Center pending further proceedings on the matter and adjourned the case to June 15, 2026, for arraignment hearing, following a request for legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The development comes months after the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) concluded investigations into the fatal shooting incident and forwarded the case file to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) for review and prosecution.
In that earlier briefing on May 3, 2026, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed that investigators found ASP Nuhu and members of his team guilty of professional misconduct and actions that led to the unlawful killing of Ogidi.
He further said that the disciplinary proceedings had been concluded and ratified by the Police Service Commission (PSC), leading to the dismissal of officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
Placid also revealed that other suspects, including a driver suspected of transporting a package from Yenagoa and two vigilantes linked to the incident, were still at large at the time.
Monday’s court appearance therefore represents the continuation of the judicial process following the conclusion of administrative and disciplinary actions within the police hierarchy.
Speaking after the hearing, human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, described the officers’ appearance in court as a positive step towards accountability, noting that the court ordered their continued detention pending legal advice from the DPP.
“Today they finally produced the officers, including the main suspect and others, in court. The judge ordered them to remain in custody while the DPP examines the case,” he said.
Gwamnishu, however, expressed concern over the alleged poor communication between the authorities and the family of the deceased, claiming that the autopsy report had not been made available to them.
He also expressed concern about limited public access to the proceedings, although observers insisted on being present in court.
According to him, future hearings could take place virtually, with the defendants released from correctional custody while the proceedings are followed remotely.
Family members of the deceased also expressed frustration at what they described as a lack of official communication from authorities handling the case.
A cousin of the deceased, Emuobor Alex, said the family had not been formally informed of the court session and had only received updates through unofficial channels.
“We were advised to contact the police commissioner, but later received information from activists that the case would be investigated today. We rushed to Asaba immediately,” he said.
Alex added that the family arrived in court after the proceedings concluded and asked for better communication going forward.
Likewise, the elder brother of the deceased, Victory Ogidi, criticized the resort to social media to get updates on a matter that directly affects the family.
“We lost our brother and should not rely on social media to know what is happening in a case that directly affects us,” he said.
He urged the Attorney General of Delta State, the Ministry of Justice and the Nigeria Police Force to ensure transparency and regular updates as the prosecution proceeds.
