Fayose renews accusations against Makinde over alleged plot to oust Olubadan

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has reiterated his claim that the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, is planning to remove the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, despite repeated denials from the state government and the palace.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Tuesday, Fayose insisted that the event would soon validate his claims. He alleged, “Those who still have doubts about Governor Seyi Makinde’s plan to oust the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rahidi Adewolu Ladoja, should remain hopeful and follow developments,” pointing out that the recent allegations against the king were part of a calculated effort to justify his ouster.

He further stated, “They denied that there was any rift between Olubadan and Makinde after I announced the same. But now, they are accusing Olubadan of plotting to impeach Governor Makinde,” adding that the allegations of political bias against the king were “part of an orchestration… to prepare grounds for Olubadan to be questioned.”

The controversy comes amidst rising political tensions in Oyo State, where the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Gbenga Oyekola, distanced himself from efforts made by some lawmakers to impeach the governor.

Oyekola, who represents Atiba State Constituency, rejected the report in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, and stressed his commitment to stability in the state. “I hereby completely disassociate myself from any arrangement or activity that has the potential to disturb the peace of Oyo State. I was never invited, never consulted, and was not part of any such meeting or arrangement,” he said.

Reaffirming his loyalty to the governor, he added, “I cannot and will not be disloyal to my superiors…I remain firmly committed to peace, unity and continued progress in Oyo State.”

Fayose’s latest statement follows previous allegations that he claimed there was a plot to overthrow Olubadan—a claim immediately denied by the Oyo State Government and the king.

Responding to the allegations, a media aide to Olubadan downplayed the matter, saying there was no dispute between the palace and the government. “It would be a shame if this is not a rumour. Even though I read it like you read it online. I don’t see the cause of the dispute between the governor and the Olubadan of Ibadanland,” he said.

Likewise, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, rejected the claim, stating that the government had no such intention. He stated that the government had “never considered, discussed, or planned such action,” and described the allegations as baseless.

“Nowadays, Nigerians know who and what to believe, especially if the information comes from certain parties. The Oyo State Government has never considered, discussed or planned such action.

“There must be a credible motive for every government action, and motives that come from the unofficial spokesmen of our opponents are better thrown into the dustbin. Desperate politics spreads senseless propaganda and turns democracy into a joke,” he said.
