Former SDP Chairman jailed for alleged mismanagement of funds

Police on Tuesday charged former National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Shehu Gabam, for alleged criminal misappropriation of funds at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Magistrate’s Court.

The former SDP leader is also on trial on charges of breach of trust and forgery.

Gabam was detained before Chief Justice Amauche Onyedium along with Chukwuma Ogbonna Uchechukwu in suit no. DCC/10/2026.

A direct criminal complaint was filed by the current National Chair of the SDP, Dr. Sadiq Abubakar, based on the relevant provisions in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.

When the matter arose, the complainant’s counsel informed the court that the prosecution needed time to respond to the bail application filed by the accused.

The chief judge then allowed Gabam to post bail of N3 million with two sureties who must own the property of a plot of land in Abuja.

He also ordered the defendant to entrust his international passport to the court clerk while waiting for the decision in the case.

Onyedium, thereafter, adjourned the matter to May 25 for further hearing.
