Governor Peter Mbah of the state of Enugu has granted forgiveness to 11 inmates in enugu aimed at decongesting the correction structures in the state.
Mr. UCC Anichukwu, Mbah’s Special Senior Assistant for external relationships, revealed it in a Sunday statement in Enugu.
Anichukwu said that the gesture was a step to give beneficiaries another opportunity to live a better life as members of the company.
He said that the beneficiaries of clemency were sent to the state attorney general and commissioner for justice, dr. Kingsley Udeh, from Mbah’s head of staff, Victor Udeh.
According to Anichukwu, the beneficiaries are Ugochukwu Oma, Onah Nnamdi, Chiadikobi UN, Emmanuel Sambo, Emeka Nyia and Ngene Olube.
Others are Francis Chinecherem, Eze Chigozie, Anthony Tombari, Francis Chibuzor and Uzoma Nnaoche.
He explained that the governor’s decision was in the exercise of his prerogative of powers of mercy pursuant to section 212 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
Anichukwu said: “He was also in consultation with the advisory council on the prerogative of mercy.
“The decision was in concordance with reports of proven character reforms, ability to reintegrate itself with the society that has possessed or learned some productive skills.
“He followed the recommendations by the correction and consultative council services on the prerogative of Misericordia, chaired by the Prosecutor General and the Commissioner for Justice.
“The advisory council on the prerogative of Mercy attracts belonging from the Nigerian correction service, organization for interests of Carmelita prisoners (Capio), the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace (Cidjap), among the other reliable institutions of the justice sector.”
