Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mohammed announced the switch at the end of an expanded stakeholder meeting on Saturday in Bauchi.
He said this action was due to unresolved internal challenges within the PDP and the need for political repositioning.
The governor said the move also involved several PDP stakeholders and party members across the state.
Last month Mohammed abandoned plans to switch to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after the two parties failed to reach an agreement on sharing positions in the ruling party.
He said: “After careful consideration and extensive consultation with leaders and stakeholders across the country, it has become clear that our efforts to restore stability have not produced the expected results.”
He however thanked the PDP for its contribution to Nigeria’s democratic development, and stated that the party provided a platform for growth, service and meaningful national contribution.
“As political leaders, we cannot allow our people to lose faith in our core values or in the effectiveness of the platforms we represent.
“Our job is to provide clarity, direction and opportunity for our community and future generations,” added the Governor.
Mohammed explained that his decision to join APM was strategic and aimed at creating a credible platform to better serve society.
He said the new political direction would focus on mobilizing supporters, strengthening party structures and presenting a viable alternative in the next elections.
The Governor expressed his confidence in the integrity and capacity of the APM leadership.
He also revealed that members of the State Executive Council who intended to vie for elected positions have resigned in accordance with the law and commended them for their service and wished them success.
Mohammed stressed that the defections were a deliberate attempt to reposition for effective governance.
“This is not a setback, but a strategic repositioning. We remain committed to strengthening democracy and advancing governance in our country,” he said.
He outlined plans to establish a compliance committee, begin membership registration, strengthen party structures at all levels, and intensify grassroots mobilization.
The governor called on his supporters to remain calm, united and focused while engaging the public with the party’s vision for good governance.
