The Great Ife Alumni Association has celebrated the election of three of its illustrious members as companions of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), marking a prestigious academic milestone for Obafemi Awolowo University (Oau), Ile-Fafe and the global community of its Alumni.
The Honourees include Professor Gbemisola Adeoti, elected as a regular rule; Professor Akinwumi Ogundran, as an overseas companion; And Dr. Lasisi Olagunju, as the honorary member of the Academy: the scholarship of the Nigeria Apex Institution for Humanities.
In a message of congratulations, the global president of the Alumni Association, the lawyer Bunmi Falode, described the trio as “skilled academics giants” and “worthy ambassadors” of the great Ife tradition, urging them to continue to exploit their intellectual resources for the improvement of society.
“While joining the League of Eminent Persiety that model the world with their innovative ideas, I implore you to use your well-known knowledge to have a positive impact on society,” said Falode in the declaration issued by the secretary of the global advertising of the association, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.
Profiles of honors
Professor Gbemisola Adeoti, a poet, playwright and literary scholar, is widely respected for his revolutionary work in literature, media and cultural studies.
Originally from Iseyin, in Oyo’s state, Adeoti is an Oau pupil in which he obtained his first degree in dramatic limbs and a teacher in literature.
He later achieved a doctorate in English at the University of Ibadan, focusing on the aesthetics of democratization in the Nigerian drama.
His work positioned it as one of the most influential literary voices in the country.
Professor Akinwumi Ogunderan, archaeologist and historian of fame at a global level, is known for his pioneering studies on Yoruba’s civilization and Atlantic Africa.
First class graduate of Archeology of Oau, Ogunderan has achieved post-graduate degrees from the University of Ibadan and Boston University. He is the current president of the Society of Africanist Archaeologists and 2025 Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Lasisi Olagunju, an illustrious journalist and political communicator, obtained a degree in English from the OUA and advanced degrees in the arts of communication and in political communication at the University of Ibadan.
Known for its column of incisive lines on Monday in the Saturday tribune, Dr. Olagunju won more Diamond Awards for the excellence of the media (ladies) and the Nigeria Media Merit prize.
He is also a lawyer and former head secretary of a former governor of the state of Osun.
The Nigerian Academy of Letters is an autonomous academic institution dedicated to advance the scholarship and national development through the promotion of humanities.
The elevation of these scholars is not only a testimony of their personal results, but also a reflection of the lasting academic inheritance of the University of Obafemi Awolowo.
