A 49-year-old transporter in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Saburi Lateef, has reportedly confessed to killing a retired civil servant, Mrs Adedotun Oluwaseun, following a dispute over $3.45 million.

Lateef, popularly known as Alhaji Oki Osan, was arrested about 10 months after Oluwaseun’s murder at her residence in Bode Olude community.

The suspect was reportedly among those who visited the deceased’s family to cry with them after his death.

Oluwaseun, a retired secretary of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Council, was allegedly strangled, while her body bore multiple machete wounds.

A source at the Homicide Section of the Ogun State Police Command said the investigation initially gave no clear leads until detectives intensified efforts to identify the perpetrator.

The source said the police commissioner, Olubode Ojajuni, ordered officers to clarify the circumstances of the murder.

According to the source, investigators suspected that the attack may have been motivated by the belief that the deceased had recently received her pension.

In his account, Lateef said he had known Oluwaseun for about 10 years and claimed that she owed him N3.45 million from the proceeds of his broken down truck, which he said he sold to raise funds for another vehicle.

He alleged that after selling the truck for N3.5 million, he gave N50,000 to the people working around where it was parked and handed over the remaining money to the deceased, expecting her to assist him financially.

Lateef said the deceased had repeatedly postponed granting the promised loan and later refused to repay the money.

He reportedly admitted that he gained access to his living room after removing a burglar-proof device from a window.

According to her account, when she returned home an argument broke out, during which he strangled her and inflicted machete cuts on her body.

However, the deceased’s family denied knowing the suspect or being aware of any financial dealings between him and his mother.

The eldest daughter, Mrs Taiwo Atanda, described the circumstances of her mother’s death as shocking and difficult to understand.

Recounting her mother’s last hours, Atanda said Oluwaseun visited her after attending a friend’s retirement party in the Rounder area of Abeokuta.

“She came to my house and spent several hours with me and my children before returning home in the evening. There was nothing to suggest anything was wrong,” he said.

Atanda said she became worried the following day when her mother didn’t make her usual phone calls and her phone remained turned off.

“I knew something was wrong because my mother would normally call us. When I couldn’t reach her, I contacted a neighbor to help check on her,” she said.

According to her, the neighbor then joined another resident to check the house, where they discovered Oluwaseun’s body in the bathroom closet.

The discovery, he said, left the family devastated.

Atanda also expressed surprise that the suspect was allegedly among those who came to mourn with the family after the killing.

“We don’t know this man. We celebrated Christmas with my mother and never saw him at her house,” she said.

He called on the police and Ogun State Government to ensure that the investigation leads to justice for his mother.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Banaseyi, attributed the breakthrough to the tenacity, professionalism and commitment of the officers involved in the investigation.

He assured residents that the command remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of criminal acts are brought to justice.

The suspect’s claims regarding the 3.45 million naira have not been independently established, while the family disputes his account of their relationship with the deceased.
