Minister of Flight Development and Aerospace Nigeria, Festus Keyamo, has admitted that despite important improvements have been carried out to the country’s airport – especially Lagos’ Murtala Muhammame International Airport (MMIA) – they still failed from international benchmarks.
Keyamo made honest acceptance in response to tweets by academic and career coaches based in the UK, Dr. Dipo Awojid (@ogbenidipo), who praised the experienced passenger experience in MMIA.
“Kudos @fkeyamo, Lagos Airport has changed forever,” Tweet Awojire.
He added: “The plane to welcome the area that looks cleaner and the security area is designed well. My bag came out in 10 minutes. Out to the parking area was much better. I said this was someone who had been traveling for more than 15 years.
In a measurable reply, Keyamo thanked Awojid for his confession while offering a serious reality examination.
“Thank you, @ogbenidipo, for your praise. But our airport is still far from global standards, I must admit,” the minister wrote. “We only make the best of the situation as we found.”

Keyamo continued to explain the roots of the infrastructure challenges faced by Nigeria Airport, quoting the Odia Original Terminal Design MMIA.
“The old MMIA terminal was built in 1977 and was designed to handle around 200,000 passengers per year,” he said. “Now, we do around 3 million passengers at the airport only per year and around 15 million nationally per year. See the difference! Therefore, for years, the facilities almost collapsed!”
Apart from the current limitations, the Minister assured Nigerians that major changes were in the horizon, it was possible by the administration of the Ball President Ahmed Tinubu.
“But thank you to Ball President Ahmed Tinubu, @officialibat, we will begin rebuilding the total MMI Old Airport in Lagos to meet modern standards, with a projection of around 20 million passengers per year,” Keyamo said. “We will reveal the complete details before the Nigerians in the next few weeks.”
When praising the progress made, the Minister’s statement highlighted the scale of challenges ahead when Nigeria tried to harmonize the flight infrastructure in the hope of global.
