Light drama in the Senate as Oshomhole opposes Akpabio

There was mild drama in the Senate on Wednesday, when Senator Adams Oshiomhole representing Edo North interrupted the Senate President who was addressing the upper house.

The move sparked several arguments as other Senators joined in calling for Oshomhole to order, with the Senate President threatening to use the order to expel him from the red chamber.

When Akpabio began reading the Vote and Proceedings on Tuesday, Oshiomhole raised a point of order, and the Senate President had to remind him of the rules of the Senate as contained in the 2023 Standing Orders as amended: that when going through this Vote and Proceedings, a point of order is not always taken.

As Oshiomhole continued, Akpabio called on former Chief Whip, Senator Orji Kalu (APC, Abia North) to educate Oshiomhole on order, and Kalu said the same thing as the Senate President: that there was no point in order at this point.

At this point, Oshiomhole did not stop, and his whip, Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North) warned that if the Edo North senator continued, he would use the powers at his disposal and then asked Oshiomhole to be guided.

Akpabio then continued to this point, and suggested that they all read the regulations and head to Order 20.

Akpabio said, “We should not just go home, buy a form and come here without knowing the rules”.

He then issued a stern warning to Oshiomhole, warning him against further harassment. “Oshiomhole, if you misbehave, we will use the rules to expel you from the Senate,” he said.

Akpabio then went on and on, with Senator Adamu Aliero (APC, Kebbi Central) moving for a vote and process and supported by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South).

NES TASKS MEMBERS TO PLANTING TREES AS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATES IN ABEOKUTA Urges residents to take personal responsibility for environmental protection Tasks members to plant at least one tree each, drives climate action The President of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Abeokuta Chapter, Alhaji (Chief) Jamiu Adebayo Badmos, has called on professionals environmentalists and residents to take concrete actions against climate change by adopting tree planting methods and sustainable environmental practices. In a special message to mark World Environment Day 2026, Badmos stressed that protecting the environment remains a shared responsibility that cannot be left to government alone, but must be driven by deliberate individual and community actions. He noted that the annual global observance serves as a reminder of the urgent need to safeguard the environment from worsening climate conditions, pollution and ecological degradation. “This year’s celebration reminds us that protecting the environment is not the exclusive responsibility of governments and institutions; it is a collective duty that begins with individual actions,” he said. The NES President urged members of the Abeokuta chapter to set an example by planting at least one tree each in their homes, workplaces or communities, describing tree planting as a practical step towards environmental sustainability. According to him, a single tree plays a critical role in carbon sequestration, air purification, erosion control, biodiversity conservation and broader climate change mitigation efforts. It also encouraged members to document and share evidence of their tree planting activities as part of efforts to promote responsibility and inspire broader public participation in environmental management. “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago; the second best time is now,” Badmos said, urging immediate action rather than continued delays in addressing environmental challenges. He expressed optimism that sustained efforts to plant trees would help make Abeokuta greener, Ogun State healthier and Nigeria more resilient to environmental risks. Badmos reaffirmed NES’s commitment to ongoing support, awareness creation and practical interventions aimed at promoting a cleaner and more sustainable environment. He congratulated the chapter members on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, urging them to remain steadfast in their commitment to environmental protection and climate action. AND
