A governorship candidate in the 2023 Kogi State elections, Yakubu Murtala Ajaka, has apologized to former governor Yahaya Bello, calling for peace, unity and collective progress in the state.
Ajaka, who contested the November 2023 governorship election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), made this known in a public statement released on Monday.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the election, he acknowledged that the intensity of the competition had strained political relations and deepened divisions, particularly between himself and the immediate past governor.
“The political disagreement between me and the then governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Yahaya Bello, was characterized by strong differences.
“The circumstances were driven by passion and commitment to our respective causes rather than personal animosity,” he said.
In a conciliatory tone, Ajaka described his move as a deliberate step towards reconciliation.
“Today, in the paramount interest of peace, unity and progress of our dear State, I believe it is necessary and honorable to rise above the past. I extend a hand of understanding and goodwill, and where my actions or words may have caused offense, I deeply apologize in a spirit of reconciliation,” he added.
He noted that he chose to let go of all grievances and move forward, emphasizing the need for healing and collective progress.
Ajaka also appreciated his supporters across the State including elders, youth, women and political associates who supported him during the election period.
He paid tribute to those who lost their lives during the political process, describing their sacrifice as one that must not be forgotten, while praying for the repose of their souls and comfort for their families.
The former SDP candidate said his decision to speak at this time was guided by the ongoing consultations and commitment to act in the collective interest of the people of Kogi East.
He urged political actors and citizens to prioritize unity over division, stressing that no ambition should surpass the peace and stability of the state.
“At this critical juncture in our State’s journey, we must remind ourselves that no ambition, no competition and no individual interest is greater than the peace, stability and collective progress of Kogi State,” he said.
Ajaka called for a renewed focus on collaboration and inclusion.
“Our focus must now shift from division to unity and collaboration, and from the past to the future we must build together,” he said.
