NAFDAC cracks down on fake Milo chocolate drink producers in Bauchi market

BUSINESS REVIEW: How counterfeit consumer products are killing the Nigerian market

The Bauchi State Office of the National Food and Drug Administration (NPDA) has begun a three-day operation to rid the market of fake Milo chocolate drinks.

Dr. Paul Kamai, Bauchi State NAFDAC Coordinator, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday, disclosed that the exercise, which began on Tuesday, was aimed at eliminating fake Milo products from circulation following a directive from the agency’s headquarters.

In addition to market raids, BPOM has scheduled a meeting with leaders of agricultural chemical traders associations to warn against using hazardous chemicals, such as Dictholoruvis and Paraquat, to store food. These chemicals, which are banned due to their dangers, are often used as preservatives, especially during the harvest season.

“The BPOM office has started conducting inspections in markets and supermarkets to remove fake Milo in circulation following instructions from the Head Office.

“This exercise will last for three days starting Tuesday,” he said.

The country director also said the agency has scheduled a date this week to engage with leaders of agrochemical traders’ associations about the dangers of chemicals in food.

“In Bauchi, we will be appealing to agrochemical traders to oppose the use of Dictholoruvis and Paraquat chemicals to store food as we approach harvest time.

“These are hazardous chemicals that have been banned from time to time,” he added.

The agency’s efforts are aimed at protecting consumers from harmful products and ensuring food and drug safety in Bauchi State.
