Navy @70: FOB FORMOSO defends waterway safety and distributes life jackets in Bayelsa

As part of activities celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO has stepped up efforts to promote waterway safety in riverine communities through the distribution of free life jackets and provision of free boat transport services in Brass Local Government Area of ​​Bayelsa State.

Speaking during the awareness program held on Sunday, Commander of FOB FORMOSO, Captain SK Haruna, underlined the importance of prioritizing safety on inland waterways, stressing that water transport remains a major means of movement for residents of coastal communities.

According to him, the initiative was designed to encourage safe boating practices and reduce the growing incidence of avoidable boating accidents in the area.

“Water transportation remains an essential means of movement in our river communities. However, safety must always remain our top priority,” he said.

Captain Haruna explained that the distribution of life jackets reflects the commitment of the Nigerian Navy and critical stakeholders towards safeguarding lives and improving safety awareness among riverine dwellers.

He also expressed concern over recent road accidents in Brass, which reportedly led to loss of life, stressing that adhering to basic safety precautions could help prevent such tragedies.

The Navy Chief noted that the unfortunate incidents largely influenced the decision to provide free life jackets to members of the host communities as part of the commemorative activities of the Navy’s platinum jubilee celebration.

The event attracted key stakeholders including the Police Officer of Brass Division, CSP Okifo Peter; Chairman of the Council of Elders of TWON Brass, Chief Emmanuel Jacob; and Oando Brass Terminal Station Security Officer Yusuf Ahmed, along with community leaders and other dignitaries.

Residents have praised the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that can save lives and strengthen safety culture in riverine communities in Bayelsa State.
