The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of former Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha on charges of criminal conspiracy and forgery of documents.
The Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, confirmed that the former governor, who is a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was arrested, interrogated and later released on bail.
Iniedu revealed that Okorocha was released on bail on Monday but was ordered to report to the police on Tuesday for further questioning as investigations into the allegations continued.
The development comes following reports that the former governor was arrested at a hotel in Abuja while attending a reception organized to celebrate his friend being conferred with the rank of Senior Lawyer of Nigeria (SAN).
The circumstances of the arrest have drawn attention to the ongoing police investigation, although authorities have not publicly provided detailed information about the specific charges against Okorocha.
The police confirm the investigations
Confirming the developments, Iniedu maintained that Okorocha had been taken into custody, questioned by detectives and granted bail.
The police spokesperson, however, did not reveal details of the alleged criminal conspiracy and forgery of documents, nor did he explain the specific circumstances surrounding the allegations.
The Force also did not provide further information on the evidence examined by investigators or indicate when the investigation would conclude.
Okorocha’s release on bail is not the conclusion of the investigation, as police have ordered him to return for further questioning.
The bench warrant has reportedly been obtained
Arrest reports indicated that police had obtained an arrest warrant following Okorocha’s alleged failure to honor summonses to appear for interrogation.
A warrant is generally issued by a court to authorize the arrest of a person who is required to appear before it under specific circumstances.
However, police have not publicly provided further details about the reported warrant, including the court that issued it or the specific proceedings related to the matter.
The former governor’s alleged failure to honor previous invitations is said to have contributed to the measures taken by authorities to ensure his appearance for interrogation.
Further details about the allegations, including the circumstances of the alleged forgery and the nature of the suspected plot, remain secret.
Okorocha, who governed Imo State from 2011 to 2019, is a prominent APC leader and former senator. Police investigations are ongoing and the former governor is expected to return for further questioning as directed by authorities.
