Okonjo-Iweala to run for second term as WTO Director-General

World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will run for a second four-year term next year.

The former Nigerian finance minister’s term ends in August 2025.

Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to lead the WTO, was elected by the Geneva, Switzerland-based organization’s member states on February 15, 2021.

The 70-year-old took office in March of the same year.

Okonjo-Iweala’s spokesman, Ismaila Dieng, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday.

He said his leadership had taken into account “the overwhelming and broad support expressed by the WTO’s 166 member states.

The spokesman added that Okonjo-Iweala’s decision to run for re-election had been formally communicated to the WTO president, Ambassador Petter Olberg of Norway.

“We can confirm that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has formally announced her intention to seek a second term as Director-General of the WTO,” the statement said.
